Jesus Christ Superstar
What a fabulous musical experience!!! This project involved the performance of the complete Jesus Christ Superstar rock opera. The music was supplemented with inspiring narrative that helped place the musical storyline in context with the events and mood of the day. Jeff eloquently explains how this project was a dream of his, and others in the program notes for the Scecina performance.
The performance entourage was officially known as Voices In the Desert (I guess everyone was too lazy to come up with a new name). The core musicians came from the Voices group that recorded the gospel rock CD. A cast of thousands was added for the various vocal parts and one extra keyboard for the orchestration. They're names and roles are noted in the Superstar Cast link.
A year and half in the making, the project was performed several times before live audiences. The dress rehearsal was at Old Bethel Methodist Church in 1994. Portions of that performance were captured on video (see the link below). The main performance was a multi-media event with a large screen displaying pictures or images that followed the story line. That performance was videotaped with the ambitious goal of a really cool multi-media video that incorporated the images and band performance...however...the really cool video never materialized.
The second performance was not "professionally" recorded but was captured on tape to provide audio documentation of the project.
